Somma / Somme

Dnes (1. července) je výročí začátku bitvy na řece Sommě, jedné z nejkrvavějších bitev 1. světové války. Během pěti měsíců (červenec až listopad 1916) v ní padlo přes 300 000 vojáků. Jen za její první den bylo zabito na britské straně (jedna ze tří bojujících armád) 19 240 mužů.

Celkové ztráty v bitvě (zahrnující mrtvé, raněné i padlé do zajetí) přesahují
1 milion mužů.

Today (1st July) is the anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War. More than 300 000 soldiers were killed in the five months (July–November 1916) that the battle took. In the first one day of the battle, 19 240 soldiers of the British army (one of the three of the fighting armies) died. 

Total losses of the battle (including soldiers dead, wounded and taken as prisoners) make up more than 1 million men.
